Shipbuilding

As a country crisscrossed by hundreds of rivers, Bangladesh has long shipbuilding in its blood. Dockyard and Engineering Works Ltd (DEW Ltd) began its journey in 1926 as Narayanganj Dockyard Limited, the first dockyard of its kind in the Indian subcontinent. Over the decades, DEW Ltd has upheld a proud tradition of shipbuilding excellence for more than a century. Since coming under the management of the Bangladesh Navy in 2006, the dockyard has experienced significant growth and modernization.

Built on 21.78 acres of land with a 900-feet riverfront, the facility can accommodate vessels of up to 1,500 tons (lightweight) and 88.4 meters (290 feet) in length. The yard has an annual production capacity of 2,070 tons of steelwork. It includes 27,220 square meters of open space and 3,000 square meters of enclosed shipbuilding area. Notably, 26% of the total space is reserved for greenery, reflecting its commitment to environmentally friendly industrial practices.

DEW Ltd specializes in constructing a wide range of modern ships and watercraft for military, government, and private clients. These include Patrol Craft (PC), Inshore Patrol Boats (IPV), Fast Patrol Boats (FPB), Harbour Patrol Boats (HPB), gunboats, Landing Craft Tanks (LCT), tugs, oil tankers, passenger ferries, Ro-Ro ferries, survey vessels, coasters, composite high-speed boats, aluminum speed boats, bay-crossing barges, self-propelled cargo barges, and various types of pontoons. The dockyard also provides refit and repair services, along with engineering and manufacturing support for ships, craft, and machinery components.

In 1972, Bangladesh’s first warship was built at DEW Ltd in Narayanganj. Later, in 2012, the dockyard achieved another milestone by constructing a water jet powered aluminum boat, the first of its kind for the Bangladesh Coast Guard.
